This bronze statue depicts Da Shi Ye, a guardian deity with a special religious status in traditional Chinese folk religion. Also known as Mian Ran Da Shi or Ghost King, he is closely associated with Buddhist rituals for the salvation of hungry ghosts and the traditional Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival. In the folk beliefs of Chinese communities in China and Southeast Asia, Da Shi Ye is believed to command and restrain wandering spirits and maintain order in sacrificial ceremonies. Despite his fierce appearance, his image does not represent evil. This bronze Da Shi Ye Statue depicts him in a majestic seated posture, clad in elaborately decorated ancient warrior armor, with finely engraved scales on his breastplate, shoulder armor, and legs.
His face is golden, with wide-open eyes, raised eyebrows, and protruding fangs, exhibiting distinct characteristics of a guardian deity. A small image of Guanyin Bodhisattva stands atop his head, and behind him are arranged multiple command flags. His right hand in the Da Shi Ye Statue holds aloft a long pole with a hanging token, while his left hand grasps a command flag placed at an angle.
