Zebras are African equines, belonging to the genus Equus, along with horses and donkeys. The ancestors of the equines appeared in North America approximately 55 million years ago; these early horses were only the size of foxes and lived in forests. Around 4 million years ago, the genus Equus evolved in North America and subsequently spread to Eurasia and Africa. The zebra branch diverged from other equines around 2 to 4 million years ago, eventually developing its distinctive stripes and becoming the only major branch of the equine family that was not domesticated.
