1. Introduction of Eleftherios Venizelos Bronze Statue Eleftherios Venizelos entered Cretan politics as a lawyer in his early years, and was elected a member of the Cretan Parliament in 1889. During the Cretan uprising of 1897, he participated in revolutionary organizations; after Crete became a self-governing state, he entered the administrative body. In 1905, he led the Selisos Movement against Prince George, the Cretan High Commissioner. In 1908, Crete unilaterally declared unification with Greece; in 1909, the Athenian Military Alliance invited Venizelos to enter the central Greek political arena. In 1910, he served successively as head of the Cretan government and Prime Minister of Greece, transforming from a local politician into a national leader.
