Padre Pio, born Pio of Pietrelcina, was a highly respected Italian Franciscan priest in the 20th century, known for his stigmata, visions, miracles of healing, and countless confessions. He devoted his life to prayer and penance, and was considered a person of mysterious grace from God to the faithful. Canonized by St. John Paul II in 2002, Padre Pio is considered by many Catholics to be a mediator and comforter, especially those who seek the strength of faith in times of pain and illness.
