1. Introduction of The First Funeral Sculpture
The First Funeral is a famous sculpture by French sculptor Louis-Ernest Barrias. The marble version, completed in 1883, is now in the collection of the Petit Palais in Paris. The work is based on the story of Cain murdering Abel in the Book of Genesis, and the sculptor artistically depicts Adam and Eve’s grief at the death of their son Abel. The First Funeral Sculpture uses the closely intertwined postures of the three figures to present the profound emotion of humanity’s first experience of losing a loved one.
The First Funeral sculpture is carved from white marble and consists of Adam, Eve, and Abel. Adam stands at the back, with tousled hair and a short beard, his upper body muscularly defined, his arms supporting Abel’s body, looking down at his son. Eve stands to the right, leaning forward, one hand supporting Abel’s head, the other supporting his shoulder and back, her face close to her son, expressing sorrow and reluctance. Abel’s body leans horizontally, his head drooping limply, one arm outstretched, and his legs hanging naturally at different angles.
