1. Introduction of Water Nymph Sculpture
Nymph Salmacis is a water nymph in Greek mythology, associated with the Salmacis spring near Halicarnassus in Asia Minor. Her most famous story appears in Book IV of Ovid’s Metamorphoses: Salmacis falls in love with Hermaphroditus and, while he bathes in the spring, becomes entangled with him, eventually praying to the gods that they may never be separated, and thus they become one. This marble Water Nymph Sculpture depicts Salmacis in a seated posture.
The figure is bare-chested, with the lower body covered by light folds of clothing. One leg extends to the side, while the other is bent and tucked in. The left hand lightly touches the foot, and the right hand supports the body at the side, making the entire posture appear stable and natural. Her head is slightly lowered, her gaze downward, and her hair is tied back, with a delicate floral ornament encircling her forehead. The Water Nymph Sculpture features soft transitions between the shoulders, arms, waist, and legs, while the clothing uses continuous folds to create rhythmic variations.
