William Wilson Corcoran (1798–1888) was a 19th-century American banker, art collector, and philanthropist who lived in Washington, D.C. He began his career in finance and banking, accumulating wealth before dedicating much of his time to art collecting, education, and philanthropy. One of Corcoran’s significant contributions to the development of American art was founding the Corcoran Gallery of Art. This marble William Wilson Corcoran Bust was created by American sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward; the model was completed in 1882, and the final sculpture was completed in 1883.
The figure’s hair is combed back with slight curls on the sides, and a thick mustache and short beard define his distinctive facial features.
